The Harper government took an important step in fulfilling its promise to the troubled Attawapiskat reserve.

A healing centre in the Northern Ontario reserve has been turned into a temporary shelter as the band struggles with a housing crisis.

The retrofitting of the centre is aimed at providing temporary shelter until more permanent housing arrives.

Ottawa has already purchased 22 new modular houses with the hope that they'll be in place later this winter.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan's office praised government officials Saturday, as well as the red cross and volunteers for having worked around the clock to finish the renovation of the centre.
