Protesters attempted to use the city's annual New Year's levee to deliver a message to Mayor Rob Ford today.

Activists from a group called "Toronto Stop the Cuts" attended the open house event at city hall, at one point releasing a boquet of helium baloons, carrying a banner that read "stop the cuts"

"The key thing we did here today was to show people that we are not going to let Ford pass these cuts blindly," Victoria Barnett told CP24.

Police briefly spoke to one of the protesters, but did not lay charges.

Breaking tradition, the city's annual New Year's levee was held Jan. 2 this year instead of New Year's Day, at the mayor's request.

A New Year's levee has been held in Toronto since 1968, giving people a chance to shake hands with the mayor and city councillors.
