An abandoned home that burned down overnight was investigated last month by Durham police after contractors discovered a soundproof dungeon on the property.

Durham police spokesperson Const. Nancy Van Roy told CP24 Friday morning that they are investigating the fire as a suspicious incident. They still have not determined if the dungeon was used for a criminal purpose or if it was simply built as a movie prop for filmmakers.

The fire was called in to police just after 1 a.m. and by the time fire crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. It burnt to the ground.

The home is on a rural property in Pickering and the site is actually owned by the Pickering Airport. It was set to be torn down to make way for the airport.

Van Roy said the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.

"It's appearing like it will have a criminal investigation, there were suspicious circumstances," she said.
