A 60,000 square foot warehouse in Mississauga has been destroyed by fire.

The blaze broke out inside Best Choice Express and Delivery on Elmbank Road around 11:50 a.m.

According to Mississauga Fire Platoon Chief Allan Hills, the fire was caused by a truck battery that was being charged in the warehouse.

"We believe the fire was caused by the battery arcing and once that happened it spread very quickly," Hills said. "This building is filled with household goods and other combustibles, so as you know that plays a part."

Hills said seven people were inside the building at the time of the fire.

One man in his 60s was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and is currently in stable condition.

Firefighters did not enter the building, as a collapsed roof made the situation too risky.

"It was defensive strategy," Hills said.

The facility stores goods that need to be inspected by Canada Border Services Agency officials. Damage is believed to be in excess of $1 million.

The Fire Marshall's office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
