A 19-year-old charged in connection with a horrific crash that killed his friend on Tuesday has been granted bail.
Oliver Karafa appeared in court Wednesday requesting bail, but the matter was adjourned until Thursday.
Bail was set at $20,000 and it was granted by Thursday afternoon.
Karafa is charged with impaired driving causing death and three other offences in a crash that killed 24-year-old David Chiang.
The terms and conditions of Karafa's bail are not known.
Tributes pour in
More than 48 hours after the accident, a memorial created by people who knew Chiang continues to grow, with people leaving bouquets of flowers, candles and a poster reading "Gone but not forgotten, R.I.P. David."
Chiang worked as a personal trainer at an Extreme Fitness gym in Toronto, and his co-workers are devastated by his death, according to a statement released through David Luck, the company's general manager.
"We're extremely sorry for David's family," Luck said through a spokesperson. "He was a stand-up employee and a stand-up guy."
'Awesome employee'
Company spokeswoman Stephanie Joanne described Chiang as "an awesome employee" who was eager to learn.
"At this point we are missing a friend and missing a co-worker, and trying to come together to offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends," Joanne told CP24.
In addition to his co-workers, Chiang's death came as a huge shock to his clients, Joanne said.
Relatives and friends have taken to Facebook to share memories of Chiang, who they described as a special man who people were fortunate to know.
Toronto police believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, which occurred on Mount Pleasant Road, north of Eglinton Avenue East, Tuesday at about 2:30 a.m.
Chiang was a passenger in a Range Rover that was split in half when it veered off the road and crashed into a pole at high speed.
Police said the sport utility vehicle's driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested at the scene.
