Six people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation Saturday morning following a house fire in the city's east-end.

The fire broke out at around 5:20 a.m. in the basement of a home on Ladykirk Avenue near Gerrard Street and Woodbine Avenue.

According to Toronto fire officials, two adults and two children were home at the time and awoke to the sounds of their smoke alarm. They were transported to hospital along with an elderly couple that lived in an adjoining home.

"It was a difficult fire, but the guys did a great job of knocking it down and everybody is safe," Capt. Ryan Fairlie told CP24 at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
