A report by Toronto Public Health says the city's most vulnerable citizens will soon pay the price in the fight against bed bugs if provincial funding isn't renewed.

The department is warning about a potential increase in infestations following the loss of $1.2 million in dedicated funding from the province.

The cash was part of a one-time, $5-million grant that local health units received and used to help 200 vulnerable people get rid of bed bug infestations.

In a report that is being submitted at Monday's Toronto Board of Health meeting at city hall, public health staff say they will only be able to help about 30 people each year without increased funding.

Also at its meeting, the Board of Health will consider road safety recommendations made by the city's top doctor.

Dr. David McKeown is recommending speed limits be reduced by at least 10 kilometres-per-hour on city streets.

McKeown also wants to see other safety measures implemented, including advance signals for pedestrians and special lanes that would allow cyclists to turn in front of traffic.
