SALT LAKE CITY - Canadian speedskater Denny Morrison is recovering in a Salt Lake City hospital after suffering a stroke Saturday afternoon.

Speed Skating Canada says the 30-year-old from Fort St. John, B.C., had completed a month of bike touring on the Arizona Trail and was spending some free time around Salt Lake City.

Speedskating teammate Josie Spence, who's also a certified lifeguard, was travelling with Morrison and noticed signs that he wasn't doing well.

Spence immediately drove Morrison to hospital and contacted the national team's medical staff.

Speed Skating Canada said Morrison began to show improvement while being taken to a second hospital. Scans confirmed a brain blood clot and carotid artery dissection.

No surgery was required and no blood thinners are being used, Speed Skating Canada said.

“The doctor suggested I recovered quickly because I am a very healthy young person,” Morrison said in a statement. “I would like to thank everyone for their messages of support, and especially Josie who is with me and who was able to recognize the signs quickly.”

The stroke comes less than a year after Morrison was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle accident.

“Almost a year post accident. And done mountain biking 800 miles across Arizona, I'm back in a hospital bed again. Had a stroke today,” Morrison said via Twitter on Saturday.

In the May 2015 crash, Morrison suffered a broken right leg, concussion, punctured lung, a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, bruised liver and kidneys and a small fracture in a bone near his spine.

A four-time Olympic medallist, Morrison returned to competition earlier this year.

Speed Skating Canada said Morrison's return to Canada hasn't yet been determined.
