CHICAGO - A 59-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday night after collapsing in the Chicago Marathon and receiving CPR.
The man was stricken late in the race and taken to Mercy Hospital on Chicago's near South Side, where a hospital spokesman said he remained in critical condition.
Race medical director Dr. George Chiampas said earlier in the day that the man was one of two runners who needed CPR.
The other was a 29-year-old man who had to be shocked after being stricken around the seventh mile was stable and talking to staff at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Chicago's North Side. Chiampas said another runner -- possibly a doctor -- had already started CPR by the time medical personnel arrived.
Chiampas said over 800 runners needed medical care and 24 were taken to hospitals.
