TORONTO - Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman will be wearing a new number next season.

The right-hander, who wore No. 54 this year in his rookie campaign, announced on Twitter that he's switching to No. 6 in honour of his late grandmother.

"It's official. Jersey number change. Grandma's birthday! March 6th, 1943. 6 it is!" Stroman tweeted on Monday.

Stroman also wore No. 6 for his high school team -- the Patchogue-Medford Raiders -- in Medford, N.Y.

The 23-year-old was 11-6 with a 3.65 earned-run average over 26 games for the Blue Jays this season.
