TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled right-handed pitcher Chad Jenkins from triple-A Buffalo of the International League and designated right-hander Sergio Santos for assignment.

The move was triggered by the Jays' need for a fresh arm given their recent spate of extra-innings games and Santos' sketchy performance of late.

The 31-year-old right-hander gave up two home runs in the 11th inning in an 11-7 loss to Boston on Tuesday night. The Jays used six relievers and infielder Steve Tolleson in relief of R.A. Dickey.

Asked Wednesday what future he saw for Santos, Toronto manager John Gibbons replied: "I don't know."

"We had to make a move," he added. "He hasn't been pitching too well. I don't know what's going to happen down the road."

Jenkins, 26, has split the 2014 season between Toronto and Buffalo, where in 21 games this season has posted a 1-3 record with two saves and a 4.70 earned-run average. In 21 relief appearances with Toronto this season, Jenkins has posted a 1-1 record with a 2.56 ERA.
