UFA, Russia - Alex Galchenyuk and Riley Barber each had a goal and two assists to power the United States past Germany 8-0 on Thursday at the world junior hockey tournament.

It was the first Pool B game of the competition for the Americans, who moved into a first-place tie with Canada.

The Canadians downed Germany 9-3 on Wednesday.

Sean Kuraly added a goal and an assist for the U.S., while Jacob Trouba, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ryan Hartman, J.T. Miller and Seth Jones had the other goals.

John Gibson stopped all 19 shots he faced through two periods in the U.S. goal.

He was replaced for the third by Jon Gillies, who made seven saves.
