Police in the United States have arrested two men in connection with a plot to murder and castrate Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, law enforcement officials in New Mexico have confirmed.

According to a release issued by state police in New Mexico, officers we called to a correctional facility in Las Cruces, N.M., in reference to allegations of a possible conspiracy to commit murder investigation on Nov. 20.

Police say that through their investigation two men, 41-year-old Mark Staake and his nephew Tanner Ruane, 23, were located in Vermont.

Arrest warrants for both men were drafted and approved, police say.

Police say both suspects were arrested, Staake in Vermont and Ruane in New York.

Both men face two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

They are currently awaiting extradition to New Mexico.

KRQE News in New Mexico reports that the two men were reported to police by convicted killer Dana Martin, whom the men met while in prison and who is allegedly the mastermind behind the plot which also included the murders of two other people in Vermont and Bieber’s bodyguard.

The station says Staake and Ruane planned to attack Bieber while he was in New York City to perform concerts several weeks ago.

KRQE says Martin is allegedly obsessed with the Stratford, Ont. singer and has a tattoo of him on his leg.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.
