The president for one of the unions representing striking City of Toronto workers says talks are moving along ahead of a negotiating deadline of Sunday at midnight.

"Certainly there has been fruitful discussions over the last 24 hours and we're hoping that that continues," says TCEU Local 416 President Mark Ferguson.

"We have been negotiating quite consistently since yesterday when we made the announcement."

Yesterday, a frustrated-looking Ferguson announced his union demands an agreement by midnight on Sunday or his union will walk away from the negotiating table and strike indefinitely.

CUPE Local 79, the other striking union has not publically endorsed a deadline.

Mayor David Miller responded to him in a statement, saying that the city was prepared to negotiate around the clock.

Illegal dumping continues in the city, and a Goodwill donation collection centre at the Queensway and Islington Avenue saw dozens of pieces of broken furniture and other garbage outside its doorstep.

City councilor Giorgio Mammoliti is trying to avoid legal dumping in his ward by opening up a private dumpsite for his constituents. He has set up a number of dumpsters which will be patrolled by private security guards. He says there will be no picketers and no wait times to drop off garbage.

Settlement talks continue throughout the weekend.
