Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA as a cold front bears down on the region.

The front is expected to dump two to four centimetres of snow on the city this evening before giving way to an arctic air mass that will cause temperatures to plummet to a high of – 11 C on Monday and – 17 C on Tuesday.

“Enjoy today’s relative warmth in advance of that cold front because we are going to have to say goodbye to that modified Pacific air and say hello to that cold and frigid arctic air,” CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said Sunday morning. “The coldest day of the year is on average around the 22nd of January, so really it’s not all that unusual to have a really cold pocket of air arriving for that last week or so (of January).”

According to Environment Canada, the temperatures combined with moderate winds will result in a wind chill between -25 C and -35 C on Tuesday morning.

The temperature will then get marginally better as the week goes on with a high of -10 C expected Wednesday and a high of – 7 C called for on Thursday and Friday.

Environment Canada also issued a snow squall warning for parts of the GTA late Sunday, warning that a sharp cold front could bring a band of intense flurries and blowing snow.

The agency warned that low to nil visibilities could be a possibility for drivers in the affected areas.

The warning covers Newmarket, Georgina, northern York Region and northern Durham Region, as well as a number of other areas to the east of the GTA.
