Toronto and the GTA are under a special weather statement ahead of a possible bout of freezing rain that could make for a messy commute Wednesday morning.

According to Environment Canada, a developing low pressure system originating in Colorado will hit the region shortly after sunrise, bringing with it the possibility of freezing rain.

The weather agency says that between two and five millimetres of ice accumulation is possible in affected areas.

“It will likely persist for a few hours and may pose hazardous driving conditions Wednesday morning given the cold overnight temperatures just prior to the precipitation,” the special weather statement reads.

“Much milder air will change the freezing rain to rain from west to east during the day before tapering off.”

A high of 9 C is forecast for tomorrow, however the temperature is expected to be -2 C in the early morning hours.
