Students may be back in classes today but the hot temperatures that have defined this summer aren’t going anywhere just yet.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe has issued a heat warning for Toronto ahead of several days of blistering temperatures.

The mercury is expected to reach a high of 33 C Tuesday and 31 C on Wednesday before cooling down slightly on Friday when a high of 27 C is expected.

The temperatures are considerably hotter than the seasonal average of 22 C.

During the heat warning, residents are advised to check on family and friends, especially seniors who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illness.

For those looking to beat the heat, cooling centres will also be open at the following locations:

  • Metro Hall – 55 John St.
  • East York Civic Centre – 850 Coxwell Ave.
  • North York Civic Centre – 5100 Yonge St.
  • Etobicoke Civic Centre – 399 The West Mall
  • Driftwood Community Centre – 4401 Jane St.
  • McGregor Community Centre – 2231 Lawrence Ave. E.
  • Centennial Community Centre – 1967 Ellesmere Rd.

In addition to the heat warning issued by the city, Toronto and the GTA are also under a separate heat warning that was issued by Environment Canada on Monday.
