Flooding was reported on several roads north of the city on Tuesday afternoon as heavy rain battered the region.

According to York Regional Police, there were several reports of flooded roads near the Yonge Street and Mulock Drive and Barbara Road and Davis Drive areas in Newmarket due to the storm.

Though the flooding has since subsided, police are urging drivers to use caution as the rain continues to fall.

“We are getting some reports that some areas may be flooded and we are reminding drivers to take some extra time and leave an extra space between you and the car in front of you,” Const. Laura Nicolle told CP24. “I think some people don’t necessarily adjust their driving according to the weather and that is very important. We want people to slow down.”

Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA due to the downpour, though the statement was lifted at around 5:30 p.m.

According to the weather agency, a cold front moving through southern Ontario was responsible for the system. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 millimetres were called for, however it is not immediately clear how much rain actually fell.

In Newmarket, the rain resulted in rising water levels in Holland River and Fairy Lake, and officials are warning that streams and rivers could become “dangerous.” as a result.

Speaking with CP24 on Tuesday afternoon, Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen said that crews did clean out catch basins and culverts in advance of the rain but were not able to completely prevent flooding in the region.

“We have had a very unusually heavy downpour of rain,” he said.

Localized rainfall amounts of 50 millimetres are possible in some areas, according to Environment Canada.
