Environment Canada has ended a severe thunderstorm watch for Toronto and much of the Greater Toronto Area issued earlier Wednesday.

The watch – which also included Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket, Halton, Peel and northern York region – was ended shortly before 6:30 p.m.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the release from Environment Canada had warned.

“Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.”

For residents in and around the city, however, the threat of a serious storm system tonight is minimal, according to CP24’s meteorologist.

“At this point, the storms are missing Toronto to the north and the south, and that trend will likely continue through the evening,” Chris Potter said late Wednesday afternoon.

“The greatest chance for rain will be in the early evening, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the chance for thunderstorms and rain greatly diminishes after that.”

The threat of wet weather will be gone by Thursday, Potter said, who is forecasting sunny conditions and temperatures in the mid-20s.

Likewise, Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon with a high of 26 C, and similar conditions on Friday with a mix of sun and cloud and a predicted high of 27 C.
