A winter storm watch has been issued for parts of the GTA and southern Ontario ahead of a major storm expected to arrive Wednesday.

Included in the watch are Caldeon, Newmarket, Georgina, and northern York Region as well as many other southern Ontario cities.

“A low pressure area emerging from Texas is expected to intensify into a major winter storm as it tracks northeast towards the Great Lakes on Wednesday. Latest indications suggest the moisture laden Texas low will track northeastward just south of Lakes Erie and Ontario Wednesday night and Thursday,” a statement on Environment Canada’s website reads.

According to the national weather agency, some regions included under the watch could see a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain.

“The mixed precipitation is then expected to change back to all snow by Thursday morning as colder air begins to work its way in from the north,” Environment Canada added.

As the storm arrives Wednesday, blowing snow and icy roads could create dangerous driving conditions and Environment Canada is advising against non-essential travel.

A special weather statement has also been issued for Toronto ahead of the inclement weather and the city could see a significant amount of rain and even freezing rain starting Wednesday.
