Friday started with a bitterly cold morning but today's afternoon sunshine is a sign that warmer weather is indeed ahead.

It was -22 with the wind chill early this morning in Toronto but Environment Canada says the afternoon will bring bright sunshine and temperatures should rise to -5C by 4 p.m.

While there is a chance of flurries overnight and Saturday, temperatures are expected to continue to rise this weekend above the freezing mark and will continue to rise all week.

The predicted high for Tuesday is 8 C and 9 C for Wednesday.

“Next week will be delicious,” CP24 meteorologist Bill Coulter said Friday morning. “After a seemingly never ending bout of winter, the weary will be able to take off their parkas and rejoice.”

The warmer weather will be a welcome change to what has been a season fraught with extreme cold weather warnings.

The wind chill dipped to -40 in some areas of southern Ontario in February. The cold weather is also to blame for recent massive power outages throughout Toronto and a number of water main breaks.

Mercifully, the winter season is almost over. Spring officially starts March 20.
