Toronto police have identified the young woman found severely injured in the middle of a street in the Port Lands early Tuesday morning.

Police said the young woman, who was found bloodied on Unwin Avenue, just west of Leslie Street, shortly after 1 a.m., was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died hours later.

Police have identified the victim as Leanne Freeman, 23, of Winnipeg.

A post-mortem examination determined Freeman died from a gunshot wound to the body.

For hours, police didn't know the woman's name, but investigators confirmed her identity later in the morning.

Police didn't say who found the woman or how long she had been on the road before she was found. Officers spent some time canvassing businesses in the isolated area near Lake Ontario to find out if the incident or anything suspicious was captured on surveillance video.

Initially, police suspected she may have been struck by a vehicle but a spokesman later said the incident is not considered a traffic-related matter. The initial call was for a "personal injury collision."

A team of forensic investigators examined the scene for evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
