An elderly woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle Monday afternoon.

Police say the 88-year-old driver was travelling southbound on Elm Road when she entered the intersection at Fairlawn Avenue and struck the woman at around 3 p.m.

The 89-year-old woman was pinned under the vehicle, police say. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area was closed for much of the afternoon and early evening as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.

It was reopened shortly before 8 p.m.

So far this year 21 pedestrians have been killed on Toronto streets, Toronto police Const. Hugh Smith says.

The victim’s name has not been released.
