Durham police have made an arrest in connection with a sound-proof confinement room found in an abandoned home in Pickering.

A 44-year-old man has been charged with breaking and entering with intent.

The house, located in a rural part of town on Concession Road 7, burned to the ground a month after police were alerted to the room's existence. The fire was deemed suspicious by authorities.

The home was set to be torn down to make way for the Pickering airport. However, a building inspector discovered the room and immediately notified police.

Investigators told CP24 Tuesday they believe the room was built with the intent of committing a crime, though they refused to disclose the nature of the crime.

They said their investigation revealed that the room had not yet been used.

Police are looking to the public for tips that will help them shed light on this case. Anyone with new information is asked to contact police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5407 or ext. 5324.

The suspect has been identified as Robert Edwin White, a resident from Oshawa. He made his first court appearance today and was held for a bail hearing.
