A baby girl originally pronounced dead in hospital early Sunday morning is now in stable condition, according to Toronto police.

Police say a 20-year-old woman was walking to the hospital with her mother when she gave birth to the baby near York Gate Boulevard and Finch Avenue West shortly before 6 a.m.

The woman was transported to hospital after being located by police and paramedics.

Sometime after arriving at the hospital, the baby was pronounced dead.

According to police, approximately an hour and a half later, officers noticed that a sheet that was covering the child was moving.

Medical staff was immediately notified.

The baby is now in stable condition, and the mother is healthy, police say.
