Two barns were destroyed and an unknown number of turkeys were killed in a large blaze that kept firefighters busy for almost eight hours.

At the fire's peak, a handful of homes were evacuated and airspace above the farm was closed as a precaution because of fears two propane tanks on the property may explode. No explosion occurred.

The fire broke out at Round the Bend Farm on Jane Street in Kettleby, just west of Newmarket, on Monday at about 9:40 p.m. The blaze began in one barn and quickly spread to a second one.

Firefighters kept a safe distance until they determined the propane tanks didn't pose a safety hazard. They battled the blaze overnight until it was brought under control at about 5:30 a.m.

By that time, flames had consumed two barns and killed all of the turkeys inside, but crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a farmhouse.

Firefighters are still at the scene to monitor the rubble for any hot spots that are still smouldering.

No human injuries were reported.

People who were forced out of their homes have been allowed to return and the airspace above the farm is no longer restricted.
