TORONTO - Bylaw law enforcement officers say they need an exemption from Ontario's proposed ban on using hand-held cellphones while driving.
Their association says the officers often find themselves in situations where they need to communicate quickly.
Examples are when they are called out to deal with emergencies such as fallen hydro lines, animal attacks, blocked fire routes or dealing with illegally parked vehicles in school zones.
The proposed law does exempt firefighters, police and paramedics, and the 1,300 bylaw officers say they, too, should be exempt.
The association will make its case during committee hearings on the bill at the legislature on Monday.
