TORONTO - Members of Canada's Tamil community have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the creation of an independent state in Sri Lanka.

A total of 48,583 people voted nationwide in the referendum held Saturday with 99 per cent voting yes.

Since the 70s Tamils have fought for a Tamil state in the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka.

Canada's Tamil community has been aggressive in drawing attention to the plight of Sri Lanka's Tamils.

Last Spring they staged a number of boisterous protests, including shutting down a busy Toronto expressway for several hours one evening.

A lengthy civil war ended this year in defeat for rebel forces.
