KEARNS, Utah - Christine Nesbitt of Canada finished third at a World Cup speedskating meet at the Utah Olympic Oval on Friday, but it was enough to give her the season title in the 1,000-metre event.

Nesbitt, who was born in Australia but now lives in London, Ont., finished in 1:14.41.

Germany's Anni Friesinger won the women's 1,000 metres with a time of 1:13.86. Sayuri Yoshii of Japan was second with a national record of 1:14.05.

American Shani Davis reclaimed the world record in the 1,500 metres in a World Cup speedskating meet at the Utah Olympic Oval on Friday.

Davis finished in one minute, 41.80 seconds to beat the previous record of 1:42.01 set by Canada's Denny Morrison in Calgary last March.

Morrison, who is from Chetwynd, B.C., bettered the time of 1:42.32 that Davis had shared with Erben Wennermars of the Netherlands.

Davis also won the World Cup season title in the 1,500 with 470 points. American Trevor Marsicano was second with 374 after shattering his personal best by nearly three full seconds and placing second with a time of 1:42.31.

Morrison took third (1:42.56).

The day started with the men's 500, which was won by China's Yu Fengtong (34.37). Lee Kyou-Hyuk of South Korea was second (34.38) and American Tucker Fredricks third 34.51.

Davis, who specializes in the middle distances, finished eighth in the sprint (34.78).

Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the women's 3,000 metres ahead of Germany's Daniela Anschutz Thoms with a time of 3:58.62, clinching another World Cup season title.

Kristina Groves of Ottawa won the bronze (4:00.00).

Sablikova is the defending champion in the 3,000 and 5,000, which she will race Saturday.
