OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat a cheese product made by Saputo Inc. because it could be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.

Montreal-based Saputo is recalling Faith Farms Ribbon Slices process cheese sold in two kilogram packs with a best before date of May 5, 2011.

The cheese was sold through cash and carry and deli stores, and may also have been sold to food service institutions like restaurants, hospitals, day care centres and nursing homes.

The product was distributed in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

There have been no reported illnesses so far, but the food inspection agency is monitoring the voluntary recall.

Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled but may cause listeriosis. The food-borne illness can cause high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
