Emotions are boiling over at one of the city's temporary dumping sites, as residents who live near Christie Pits Park protest the use of public green space as dumping sites.

Throughout the day on Monday, some residents of the area near Bloor and Christie Streets have been preventing people from dumping their trash at the temporary transfer station at Christie Pits.

Calling themselves The Friends of Christie Pits, the group's members say are worried about chemicals being used to control insects and vermin at the temporary dump site.

Christie Pits Park chairperson Monica Gupta says the park's skating rink, which is being used to store trash, has had ongoing drainage issues.

She said Thursday's rain storm left a significant amount of water in the rink, leaving the garbage to fester in a pool of its own filth.

"Right now we have a pool of garbage water in that rink that we can't drain," she told CP24.

The protesters say they have obtained a document that shows the city will be opening 12 additional dump sites across the city in the coming days.
