The City of Toronto is proposing a ban on coffee cups, take-out containers and plastic bags in an effort to cut down on the amount of trash being sent to landfills.

A restriction on those items would free up more space in the city's landfills, says councilor Howard Moscoe.

He says citizens should not be too opposed to the ban -- if it were to go through, because they have become accustomed to other recycling programs in the past.

The move is part of the city's plan to divert 70 per cent of trash from landfills by 2010.

The city is also considering a proposal that would require stores to have packaging removal areas, so that consumers can leave extra materials at retailers.

The proposals goes before the City Works committee in October.
