The City of Toronto's Executive Committee will debate today on the future of the Gardiner Expressway and what to do with the aging downtown artery.

There are four main options under consideration - do nothing and just maintain it, replace it with a different type of "grade-separated facility" (ie. tunnel), improve it and remove it eastward from Jarvis St.

However, maintaining the elevated expressway comes at a price of $50 million over 10 years, the Globe and Mail reports.

Replacing the highway with a tunnel and destroying the Gardiner east of Jarvis would cost anywhere from $200 to $300 million.

One west-end councillor wants to keep the aging structure in place - but beautify it, the newspaper reported.

On Monday, Waterfront Toronto discussed its goals for an environmental study, including a look at changes in driver and commuter attitudes and the ability to reconnect with the waterfront, the Globe reports.
