Mayor David Miller announced today that the city's intensive clean up of the Downsview neighbourhood affected by the August 10 propane blast will be completed this weekend.

The clean-up is estimated to cost $1.5 million.

"I would like to thank the residents of the area for the incredible patience and resilience they've shown over the past week and a half," Miller said.

Cleaning crews have been moving east from the site of the explosion on Murray Road towards Beffort Road. The crews are currently working on areas east of Garratt Boulevard.

The crews are expected to have completed their cleaning by Friday and will return to the neighbourhood on Saturday for a final sweep of the area, Miller says.

Anyone with questions on the cleanup can call the Toronto Public Health  on 416-338-7600 between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. over the weekend, and during regular business hours on weekdays.

The city is covering the cost of the cleanup, but Miller says they will work with the Ministry of the Environment to determine the most appropriate way to recover costs related to the cleanup.

Once crews leave the area, any residents who have concerns or believe they have any debris from the explosion on their property, should contact Toronto Public Health.

The city has completed indoor air quality tests in more than 35 homes throughout the neighbourhood. They say the tests have shown levels of asbestos below Ontario government standards.
