OTTAWA - The majority Conservative government has been chosen by editors and news directors across the country as Canada's News Story of the Year.

But unlike their comfortable win at the polls this spring, the Tories faced much stiffer competition in the annual survey by The Canadian Press.

Former NDP Leader Jack Layton's electoral victory came a close second, winning 24 per cent of the vote, compared to the Tories' 25 per cent.

The way both parties changed the political landscape of Canada was the reason most often cited behind the votes.

The way the Conservatives have set about implementing their agenda was singled out as another reason why their majority was chosen as story of the year.

Also earning votes in the survey were the Occupy Canada movement, the Vancouver riots, the struggles of Quebec separatists and the wildfires in Slave Lake.
