CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jaime Moreno scored midway through the second half and D.C. United beat 10-man Toronto FC 1-0 Wednesday at the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Toronto's Stefan Frei kept the scoresheet blank with a superb save from a Thabiso (Boyzzz) Khumalo shot in the 57th minute, but the Swiss goalkeeper couldn't do anything about Moreno's strike soon after.

Unchallenged by defenders, Moreno was allowed to pick his spot and fire D.C. into a 1-0 lead just after the 60-minute mark.

Toronto was reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute when defender/midfielder Amadou Sanyang was given a second yellow card.

After committing a late challenge, Sanyang appeared to get in an altercation with Julius James and was sent off.

With Sanyang's dismissal Toronto saw a player sent off for the fourth time in as many games. Gabe Gala was shown a second yellow card in TFC's opening game of the tournament, a 0-0 draw with the host Charleston Battery on Saturday.

Toronto tried to counterattack with 10 men and it came close to paying off. O'Brian White was almost through on goal in the 71st minute but was stopped by a desperation tackle from Dejan Jakovic.

With one point in two games, TFC will not have a chance to win the Carolina Challenge Cup. Toronto will try to salvage a win in its final game in the pre-season tournament Saturday against MLS champion Real Salt Lake.
