TORONTO - The developer of several downtown Toronto condominiums says it's taking immediate action to stop further incidents of glass falling onto surrounding streets.

Lanterra Developments says safety of the public and residents is a priority and it is moving to have the glass panels and railings removed from the affected buildings.

A woman was injured earlier this week when glass from one of the buildings struck her as it fell onto Bay Street.

It was the fifth time glass had fallen from the highrise condos, but the first time a passerby had been injured.

Lanterra says tempered glass used on the balconies of the three buildings will be replaced with laminated glass.

The developer says laminated glass panels will not fall apart if they break and will eliminate the potential for further incidents.

"We are working closely with the City of Toronto, our contractors and engineering experts to deal effectively with this extraordinary situation," Lanterra said Wednesday in a release.

Lanterra said all of its projects in development will make the switch to laminated glass designs, even though the tempered glass exceeded Toronto building standards.
