LEAMINGTON, Ont. - Environment Canada says a downburst, not a tornado, caused storm damage in the Leamington and Kingsville areas of southwestern Ontario this week.

Meteorologist Joseph Mengesha says wind gusts topped 110 kilometres an hour Tuesday night but the winds were in a straight line, not swirling like a tornado.

The area just south of Seacliff Drive in Kingsville was one of the hardest hit areas.

Homeowner Darren Stomp says five 100-year-old trees were ripped from the ground on his property on Campbell Lane.

Several other trees were blown over in Kingsville and Leamington, with some landing on homes in the communities about 50 kilometres southeast of Windsor.

The storm knocked out power to about 2,000 Hydro One customers.
