MAKEEVKA, Ukraine - Sir Elton John says he wants to adopt a 14-month-old boy from an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS in the east of Ukraine.

The 62-year-old singer made his announcement on a visit to Ukraine with his AIDS charity foundation. Ukraine has the fastest rising HIV rates in Europe.

In a media conference, John says he and his partner, Toronto-born David Furnish had talked about adoption but the singer says his age and schedule had made him reluctant.

As Furnish held a 14-month-old boy from the orphanage called Lev on his knee, John said the child had stolen his heart and that he'd love to adopt.

Elton John's AIDS Foundation collaborates with the Ukrainian ANTIAIDS Foundation of Elena Franchuk, daughter of former President Leonid Kuchma.
