TORONTO -- Nunavut-raised Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq has won the $30,000 Polaris Music Prize.

The two-time Juno Award nominee won for her album "Animism."

The Polaris is given to the best Canadian album of the previous year, as determined by a jury of journalists and broadcasters.

Montreal-based "This is the End" star Jay Baruchel hosted the gala at the Carlu in Toronto.

Most of the nominees performed, including Vancouver-based rapper Shad, past winner Owen Pallett and Toronto multi-instrumentalist Basia Bulat.

Neither Arcade Fire nor Montreal experimental collective Yamantaka // Sonic Titan took the stage, and Drake was simultaneously booked to perform with Lil Wayne at the Hollywood Bowl.
