Seven people are homeless after a fire tore through a home in Markham early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home near Woodbine Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive at about 2:40 a.m.

York Regional Police say the fire started in the basement and then quickly spread. By the time emergency crews showed up, flames could be seen shooting out of the home, police say.

All seven people inside the home made it out alright and police say no injuries were reported.

A Markham Fire official says the fire doesn't look suspicious and the cause isn't known yet.
