KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. - About 300 people remain out of homes and cottages near Kirkland Lake, in northeastern Ontario, because of a threat from a nearby forest fire.

People were told to leave residential and cottage areas at Goodfish and Nettie Lake, about 600 kilometres north of Toronto, for safety reasons on Sunday.

There have been no new evacuations and no homes have been damaged. Provincial police say Highway 11 is open.

The fire that broke out Sunday is about three kilometres from the town of Kirkland Lake. Cooler weather Monday provided a reprieve but the Ministry of Natural Resources says hot, dry weather is expected for the next few days.

Crews using a pumper truck and aided by helicopters with water buckets are battling the fire. A temporary shelter for displaced residents has been set up at the legion in Kirkland Lake.

Meanwhile, provincial police say a stretch of Highway 144 southwest of Timmins remains closed due to a forest fire in an area north of Gogama.

Highway 101 west of Timmins also remains closed to westbound traffic at the intersection of Highway 144 although eastbound traffic to Timmins is permitted with a police escort.

Cottages in the area west of Timmins have been evacuated and police are urging recreational users to stay out of the forest between Timmins and Foleyet due to the unpredictable nature of the fire.
