A glacial blast of arctic air has robbed the GTA of its brief warm spell.

The mercury plummeted 14 degrees Celsius between Friday night and Saturday morning, bringing temperatures as low -18 Celsius, with a wind chill making it feel like -27 C.

The City has placed an extreme cold weather alert in effect, the eighth issued so far this winter.

The alert prompts city agencies that assist the homeless to open addition shelter spaces and launch other emergency services.

Drivers planning to leave the city are advised to be prepared for some tricky winter driving. Environment Canada is warning of snow squalls in Bracebridge, Parry Sound and Huntsville.
