A planned expansion of GO Transit service to areas north and west of Toronto will create roughly 3,500 jobs, Ontario's government says.

GO rail service is being extended to the Kitchener-Waterloo area by the end of the year. The new service will include stops in Acton, Guelph and Kitchener.

A one-way trip from Kitchener to Union Station will cost just under $15.

Meanwhile, the Richmond Hill GO line will be extended north to Gormley by late 2013.

A new station that is being built at the end of the line is expected to attract new riders and cut the number of vehicles on highways in the area.

GO Transit said Tuesday that its customers arrived on time at their destinations 94 per cent of the time in the last fiscal year, up from 91.7 per cent in 2009-10.

GO Transit said its annual ridership has jumped 1.2 per cent to 57 million passengers.
