Toronto residents may want to grab a cold drink because a heat alert has been issued for the city.

Toronto medical officer Dr. David McKeown says people should make sure they stay hydrated and keep cool indoors during today's expected high of 31 C, or 25 C near Lake Ontario.

Residents are advised to check in on friends, neighbours and family members who are at risk from heat-related illnesses such as the elderly or those with medical conditions.

Hot and humid weather is expected to scorch southwestern and south-central Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada says more parts of the province will be feeling the heat tomorrow.

Humidex values are expected to hit 40 C across southern Ontario from Windsor, Ont. to the Ottawa Valley.
