An East-end house fire is now under control, but not without causing approximately $50,000 in damage to the property.

The fire broke out in the attic of a home near Bellamy Rd. and Lawrence Ave. shortly after 7 a.m. this morning.

According to Platoon Chief Reid Page the homeowner heard a strange "cracking" noise when he got up to go to the bathroom, investigated, and saw smoke.

He then alerted his family and another that lived in the basement and had everyone evacuate.

There were a total of seven people including three children under the age of 10 in the home at the time.

"Very clear to say this family is very lucky," Page told CP24.

Fire crews needed to pull down large segments of the homes ceiling in order to gain access to the fire, Page added.

It was considered under control shortly before 9 a.m.
