Police are investigating after human remains were found in the Caledon area Thursday night.

The Ontario Provincial Police say remains were found in a ditch off of Heart Lake Road at about 6 p.m. It's believed the remains had been there for some time.

The Criminal Investigation Branch of the OPP, including a forensics unit, is searching the scene for clues. Police have set up a blue tent over the spot where the remains were found.

The area is very rural with homes and farms dotting the landscape.

CP24's Melissa Grelo says police are canvassing the area, asking residents if they have noticed anything or anyone suspicious in the area going as far back as January.

Details about the age and gender of the deceased are unknown. The cause of death is also unknown, but an autopsy is scheduled.

Ryan Howard, a resident of the area, says a jogger found the remains.

Howard, 19, says police have told residents the remains are those of a woman. Police won't confirm that information.

Heart Lake Road is closed between Boston Mills Road and Old Base Line Road.
