BAGHDAD - Iraq's prime minister says a bombing in the Green Zone earlier this week was an assassination attempt against him.

During an interview with The Associated Press Saturday, Nouri al-Maliki said the parliament building or speaker also could have been targets but preliminary information suggests the bombers were trying to get him.

Al-Maliki says the bomb was supposed to go off when he visited parliament to address lawmakers but he wasn't there at the time.

The blast inside the central Baghdad zone that is supposed to be one of Iraq's most secure areas has raised concerns about whether the Iraqi forces are able to protect the country when the U.S. military leaves.
