TORONTO - The first person to stand trial in the Boxing Day 2005 shooting death of 15-year-old Jane Creba has pleaded not guilty.

The man, who was 17 at the time of the killing and can only be identified as J.S.R., is on trial for second-degree murder, among other charges.

Creba was killed when she was caught in the crossfire of a brazen gun battle on Toronto's Yonge Street.

The Grade 10 student was in a throng of bargain hunters when she was shot and six other people were wounded.

The Crown had just begun its opening address when a juror unexpectedly stood up, walked through the jury box toward the door and then slumped down.

The courtroom was cleared and it was not immediately known when proceedings would resume.
