TORONTO - A union leader for Toronto transit workers is ripping into the provincial government for pushing through legislation to ban TTC strikes.

Amalgamated Transit Union president Bob Kinnear is accusing the Liberals of violating workers' rights to save a few seats in the fall election.

He says the province claims it's doing what the city wants, then turned around and denied new Mayor Rob Ford's request for more money for the TTC.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says the two requests can't be compared, because Toronto city council backed Ford's demand for essential service legislation.

He says the government is doing the right thing by putting the wheels in motion to ban transit strikes and lockouts in Toronto.

Ford wants the bill passed before the first labour contracts at the TTC expire later this month.
